SOUL Post: Soul Searching

Hi guys!

Pinch, punch first of the month! Do they still do that? I remember in Primary School on the first day of the month everyone would go around punching and pinching each other to welcome the new month. I hated being caught out... thinking about those times makes me feel old; and I'm still young!

Being 24, not yet 25; close to 30 but not close enough. 24 has its pros and cons. I always imagined by 25 I'd be married maybe with some kids lol. It's funny how when we're young we think of our ideal lives, and its interesting to be here now and think about how different my life is to how I imagined and dreamed it would be. I also imagined I'd be either a doctor or a lawyer, and owning my own beauty magazine!

It was summer 2012 when I applied to University of Westminster through Clearing and managed to gain a place on the BA Commercial Music course. I was so excited I'd finally get to study what I enjoy. Near to the end of my second year it is safe to say i have learnt alot. If I'm completely honest this course was not what I expected either but I am much happier that I can make improvements within my reach. They say the grass is not greener on the other side but I do believe I have found a green patch on the other side in which I can seek my teeth into. The music industry in a commercial sense is not easy, but nobody said it would be. I'm just happy to play the piano, and write songs. But as well as being a musician I have learnt that I am may things in life and we cannot be defined by or as being just one thing. Especially as a creative if there's a way to express and have an outlet do it I say.

Year 2 of a Commercial Music Student: February is upon us

Hi  guys! 

So time is really flying by so fast. It's February already! 

An eventful month it's been in general. I've been so engrossed in uni work.

Right now I've been writing writing writing songs I shall be working with singers and plan to record next week. My tutor advised me now is the time to delegate. It's so easy to be so independent that you forget you may not meet the deadline. But that's the life of a perfectionist- must be a Virgo thing. My aim for this month is to work with singers and producers to record the EP, taking the songs up a notch. 

Stay tuned guys. I will keep you updated. 'Heart Strings' will be coming at you soon as well as songs I've written for the songwriting module. 

Fitness wise I've been slacking. Need to get into ze gym ASAP. There's nothing like running a cool 3-5 miles in the gym. Got to have a summer body all year round! However I have been giving in to all things containing sugar.

Year 2 of a Commercial Music Student: The Released Recording Swap

Hi guys!

So as you know one of the modules I am taking at university is The Released Recording. So our next task was to swap with a member of our class. I swapped with R&B/Soul/Pop producer Jordon Johnson. Heard one idea, number 9 and stated writing straight away. Can I say dopeness! Ever since I've been writing away, nearly finis! It's definetly r&b pop, uptempo too. It could be a hit for he clubs. Instead of talking about partying on this one I'm questioning love. I will share soon.

I swapped my dog idea 'crazy over u' it almost has a neo soul vibe to it! Next Tuesday we shall learn songwriting/production  splits. This ensures copyright and sets each contributors percentage of the song. V.important stuff.

Year 2 of a Commercial Music Student: Collabs

Lost files- 11/10/13

Yesterday was a good day. I remember in first year one of the lecturers, Mykaell Riley who also happens to be my tutor said that collaborations are the most important. So ever since I've been trying to get stuck in as they say.

I have been working on a song with which I wrote the chorus to with a fellow student, on the BMus course. The BMus students study Commercial Music too but focus more on the performance side of things rather than business and music production. It's great to meet others like yourself and we came up with the bridge and the second verse. The song got a solid thumbs up from other first year students with crazy amazing vocals may I add! Soon we shall record the demo and I will be posting a link for you all to listen.

Third Week Already: Year 2 of a Commercial Music Student

How is the month of October treating you?

So last week regarding The Released Recording was just myself creating and uploading my initial twelve song ideas which I did. Since then however ie been creating, changing things here and there. 

Last Friday wa my first time in the university studios since level 4 ( year 1) ! Luckily before I entered the studio I saw my friend, who I met at his audition to actually get onto the course. We ended up having a creative session, after I played him some ideas. It's amazing what you can do with a few words and some chords.
